6-Seater or 8-Seater Dining Table in Bangalore: Size, Shape and Room Needed
'Seater' is a marketing word, not a measurement. A 6-seater table can mean very different sizes depending on the chairs, the shape and who is sitting. The reliable way to choose is to start from the room and the people.
The Rule of Thumb: 60 cm Per Diner
Allow about 60 cm of table edge for each person so elbows do not collide. That gives a working size for each count of diners at a rectangular table:
- 4 people: about 120 to 135 cm long
- 6 people: about 150 to 180 cm long
- 8 people: about 200 to 240 cm long
- Width: 85 to 100 cm for most families; narrower feels cramped, much wider makes it hard to pass dishes
Leave 90 cm Around the Table
Chairs need space to pull back. Plan about 90 cm from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture on any side where people sit, and at least 75 cm on sides where they only walk past. Add these to the table size to find the room you really need: a 180 x 90 cm table wants roughly 360 x 270 cm of floor.
Many Bangalore apartment dining areas are tighter than that. If yours is, the answer is a smaller table or a different shape, not squeezing the chairs.
Rectangle, Round or Oval
- Rectangular: best use of a long narrow room and easy to extend; corners can catch hips in tight spaces
- Round: friendly for conversation and good in a square room, but a round table seats fewer people per square metre and gets hard to reach across above about 130 cm
- Oval: the softness of round with the length of a rectangle; works well for 6 to 8 diners
- Bench seating on one side saves space and fits an extra person, but is less comfortable for long meals
Pedestal Legs vs Four Legs
Four corner legs are stable and simple but get in the way of the chairs at the ends. A pedestal or trestle base leaves the corners clear so you can seat more people on a shorter table. Ask whether the base is rated for the table's length, because a long top on a single pedestal needs a properly engineered base.
Think About the Other 360 Days
If you host eight people twice a year, a 6-seater with an extension leaf or a second small table is often smarter than an 8-seater that dominates the room daily. A custom table can be built to extend, which a catalogue table rarely does well.
