Custom TV Unit Design in Bangalore: Sizes, Viewing Distance and Cable Planning

A TV unit is the anchor of most living rooms, and also the piece where small planning mistakes show up every day: cables on view, a console that blocks a socket, a screen that is too high. Planning these before building is what makes a custom unit worth having.

Size It to the Wall and the Screen

As a starting point, the unit should be a little wider than the TV so the screen does not look perched on it. Common unit widths run from 150 to 240 cm. If you are building a full wall unit, plan the TV area first and let the storage wrap around it.

Keep the centre of the screen at about eye level when seated, which is roughly 100 to 110 cm above the floor for a typical sofa. Mounting the TV too high is the most common comfort complaint.

Viewing Distance

A rough guide is to sit about 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal away. A 55-inch TV (about 140 cm diagonal) suits a sofa roughly 2.1 to 3.5 m from the screen. Measure your sofa-to-wall distance before choosing screen size, not after.

Wall-Mounted or Standing

  • Wall-mounted TV with a floating unit below: lighter look, easier to clean under, hides cables inside the wall panel
  • TV on the unit: simple and flexible; make sure the top is deep and sturdy enough
  • Full wall panel: the TV is set into a framed panel with storage on both sides; the most finished look, best planned as one custom piece

Ventilation and Cables

Set-top boxes, soundbars and consoles produce heat, so enclosed compartments need ventilation slots or open backs. Plan holes for cables and a place for a power strip inside the unit so nothing hangs loose. If the TV is wall-mounted, ask the electrician to place sockets behind the screen before the panel is built.

Storage That Gets Used

  • Closed doors for remotes, games and clutter
  • Open shelves for display, kept shallow so they do not collect dust
  • A deeper drawer or cabinet for media gear, with a clean pass-through for cables
  • Soft-close hardware, which matters more in a unit opened every day
