Custom L-Shaped Sofa in Bangalore: Sizes, Layouts and What to Specify

An L-shaped sofa is the most requested custom sofa in Bangalore apartments, because it seats a family in a corner that a pair of straight sofas wastes. It is also the sofa that goes wrong most often when the size is guessed.

This guide covers the decisions that matter, in the order a good maker will ask about them.

Start With the Corner, Not the Catalogue

Measure the two walls the sofa will sit against, then the distance from each wall to the nearest obstacle: a door swing, a balcony slider, a TV unit, a walkway. Leave at least 75 to 90 cm of clear walking space in front of the sofa. Most 'too big' sofas are not too long, they are too deep for the room.

A common apartment proportion is a long side of 2.4 to 3 m and a short (chaise) side of 1.5 to 1.8 m. Treat these as starting points to test against your own walls, not as rules.

Left-Hand or Right-Hand Chaise

The side the chaise sits on is described by standing in front of the sofa and facing it. A chaise on your left as you look at the sofa is a left-hand chaise. Getting this reversed is the single most common ordering mistake, so confirm it against a floor plan sketch rather than in words.

Think about where people walk in and where the TV is. The chaise usually goes on the side away from the main walkway.

Seat Depth, Seat Height and Back Angle

  • Seat depth of 55 to 60 cm suits upright sitting and smaller rooms; 65 cm and above suits lounging but needs a deeper room
  • Seat height of about 42 to 46 cm is comfortable for most adults; older family members often prefer the higher end
  • A slightly reclined back is more comfortable for long sitting than a vertical one, but takes up more floor
  • Arm style changes usable width: wide padded arms look generous but cost you seat length

Fabric and Foam for Bangalore Homes

Bangalore is humid for much of the year and bright in summer, so fabric choice is about more than colour. Ask whether a fabric is easy to wipe or clean, whether it fades in direct sun, and whether it can be replaced later without rebuilding the sofa.

Ask about foam density and what the frame is made of. These two things decide whether a sofa still feels firm after a few years of daily use, and a maker who builds in-house can tell you exactly what is inside.

Modular or Fixed?

A fixed L-shape is stronger and looks cleaner. A modular sofa, built from separate sections, can be rearranged and is easier to get up a narrow stairwell or into a lift. If your building has tight access, tell the maker the lift and doorway sizes before the design is fixed.

What to Tell Your Sofa Maker

  • Both wall lengths, the room's door and window positions, and photos from two angles
  • Who sits on it, how many, and whether children or pets use it
  • Lift, door and staircase widths for delivery
  • Reference images of sofas you like, and ones you do not

Frequently asked questions

What size L-shaped sofa suits a Bangalore 2BHK living room?
It depends on the room, not the BHK count. Measure the corner, keep 75 to 90 cm of clear space in front, and work backwards. Many apartment living rooms suit a long side of roughly 2.4 to 3 m with a 1.5 to 1.8 m chaise, but test that against your own walls.
How do I know if I need a left-hand or right-hand chaise?
Stand facing the sofa. If the chaise is on your left it is left-hand, on your right it is right-hand. Mark it on a floor plan sketch to avoid mix-ups.
Can Beyond Studio make an L-shaped sofa to my measurements?
Yes. We offer consultation and measurement, design the sofa to your room and build it in-house. Use the enquiry page to start.
