King-Size Bed With Storage in Bangalore: Hydraulic vs Drawer vs Open Base
A king-size bed takes up most of a bedroom, so putting storage under it makes sense in Bangalore apartments where cupboard space is tight. The three common storage styles work very differently, and the right one depends on the room around the bed.
Confirm Your Mattress Size First
'King' is not one size in India. Common mattress sizes include about 180 x 200 cm, 183 x 190 cm and 183 x 198 cm, and bed frames are built around the mattress, not the other way round. Pick or measure your mattress first and tell the maker the exact dimensions, including thickness.
Hydraulic Lift Storage
- How it works: the whole mattress platform lifts on gas struts, exposing one large space beneath
- Strengths: the most storage; good for bulky items like bedding, suitcases, seasonal clothes; no side clearance needed to open
- Trade-offs: the mattress must be lifted off or the platform raised with it on, so it is less convenient for items you need daily; the struts are a part that can wear
- Good for: tight bedrooms where there is no room to pull out drawers
Drawer Storage
- How it works: drawers pull out from the sides or foot of the bed
- Strengths: easy daily access, organised in compartments
- Trade-offs: needs roughly 50 to 60 cm of clear floor next to each drawer to open, and gives less total volume than hydraulic
- Good for: bedrooms with space beside the bed and items you reach for often
Open Base or Box Storage
- How it works: a hollow box base, sometimes with a hinged panel or a simple open frame
- Strengths: simplest and least to go wrong; easy to keep dry and aired
- Trade-offs: access can be awkward unless planned in
- Good for: lighter storage, or when a clean low profile matters more than capacity
Headboard and Room Around the Bed
A king bed with a headboard needs about 60 to 75 cm on each side to walk and make the bed, and at least 90 cm at the foot if there is a wardrobe or door. Add an upholstered or panelled headboard for comfort when sitting up to read, and check where sockets and switches fall so they are not blocked.
A custom bed can fold in bedside units, a bench at the foot or back-lit panels, designed into one piece with the wardrobe wall.

Frequently asked questions
- Is hydraulic or drawer storage better in a king-size bed?
- Hydraulic gives more space and needs no side clearance. Drawers are easier for daily use but need floor space beside the bed to open. Choose based on your room and what you plan to store.
- What size is a king-size bed in India?
- It varies by manufacturer; common sizes are about 180 x 200 cm and 183 x 190 to 198 cm. Always confirm the mattress size before the bed is built.
- Can I get a storage bed made to measure in Bangalore?
