Coffee Table and Console Table Sizes for a Bangalore Living Room
Coffee tables and console tables are small pieces that look easy to buy and are easy to get wrong. A table that is a few centimetres too high or too deep can make a sofa area feel awkward or block an entrance. A few rules of thumb fix most of it.
Coffee Table Height and Distance
- Height: about the same as the sofa seat or 2 to 5 cm lower, usually 38 to 45 cm; much higher and it is awkward to reach over
- Gap to the sofa: leave 40 to 45 cm so you can sit, stand and reach a cup comfortably
- Length: roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa it faces
- Walkway: keep 60 to 75 cm free on the sides where people pass
Round, Rectangular or Nesting
- Rectangular: best with a long straight sofa and gives the most surface
- Round or oval: softer, easier to walk around, good in a small room or with an L-shaped sofa
- Nesting pair: one big, one small; slide them apart for guests, tuck them together when not needed
- Low shelf or drawer: useful for remotes, magazines and games, but adds visual weight
Choosing a Top for Daily Life
Tea, water rings and children's toys are the real test. A sealed wood top, stone or a treated surface can take daily use better than a delicate finish. Ask how the top copes with heat and liquid, and whether it can be refinished later.
Console Table: Entrance and Behind the Sofa
A console is a long, narrow table used in two main ways. At the entrance it holds keys, a lamp and a mirror; behind a sofa it separates a living area from a dining area.
- Height: about 75 to 85 cm at an entrance; behind a sofa, a little lower than the sofa back so it does not block the view
- Depth: 25 to 35 cm at an entrance, so it does not narrow the walkway; up to 40 to 45 cm behind a sofa
- Length: at an entrance, about two-thirds the wall width; behind a sofa, a little shorter than the sofa
- Clearance: keep at least 90 cm of walkway in front of an entrance console, or 75 cm in a tight hall
Make Them a Set
Matching the wood tone, edge profile and legs across the coffee table, console and TV unit makes a living room look planned rather than assembled. A custom set can be designed together, using the same wood and detailing.
