Sliding vs Hinged Wardrobe Doors in Bangalore: Which Suits Your Bedroom?

The door type is the first decision in a custom wardrobe, and it quietly decides how much of the cupboard you can actually reach, how much floor the bedroom loses and how the wardrobe ages. The right answer comes from your room, not from a trend.

Hinged Doors: Full Access, Needs Floor Space

  • Strengths: the whole interior opens at once, so you see and reach everything; simple, sturdy mechanism; easy to add mirrors, handles or panelling
  • Trade-offs: each door needs a swing of roughly its own width in front of the wardrobe, which is often 45 to 60 cm per door; doors can clash with the bed or a bedroom door
  • Best for: bedrooms with 90 cm or more clear space in front of the wardrobe

Sliding Doors: Save Floor, Reach Half at a Time

  • Strengths: no swing space, so they suit narrow bedrooms and wardrobes that face the bed
  • Trade-offs: with two panels you can only open about half the width at once; the track needs occasional cleaning and the quality of the rollers decides how smooth it feels for years
  • Best for: small bedrooms, or wardrobes placed close to the bed

A Mix Often Works Best

Many well-planned wardrobes combine both: hinged doors on the tall hanging section you use daily, sliding doors on a long low run, and open shelves or drawers where access matters most. A maker who designs the interior and the doors together can balance them.

Plan the Inside First

  • Depth: 55 to 60 cm suits hanging clothes on standard hangers; shallower wardrobes force clothes to be hung sideways
  • Long hanging (dresses, sarees, coats): about 150 to 160 cm of height
  • Short hanging (shirts, tops): about 90 to 100 cm, which lets you stack two rails or put drawers below
  • Drawers for folded clothes and accessories keep the hanging space for what needs it
  • A loft above, around 40 to 50 cm high, takes suitcases and seasonal items

Humidity, Hardware and Finish

In Bangalore's humid months, closed wardrobes can hold damp air, so ask about ventilation and finish. Hinges, runners and rollers are the parts you use daily; soft-close hardware and a well-fitted track are worth asking about. Also ask how the wardrobe will be fixed to the wall and how it handles an uneven floor.

Frequently asked questions

Are sliding wardrobes better than hinged wardrobes?
Neither is better in general. Sliding doors save floor space but open only part of the wardrobe at a time. Hinged doors give full access but need swing clearance. Choose from your room's clear space.
How deep should a wardrobe be?
About 55 to 60 cm for clothes hung on standard hangers. Shallower wardrobes force you to hang clothes sideways.
