Materials We Use at Beyond Studio: Teak, Walnut, Oak, Sheesham, Cane and Brass
The material decides how a piece looks, feels and ages. Here are the materials that appear across Beyond Studio's collections, what each does well, and what to expect over the years.
Teak
A classic for Indian furniture, teak is dense, stable and naturally resistant to moisture, which suits Bangalore's monsoon. It darkens gently with age and takes oil finishes well. It is a strong choice for dining tables and beds.
Walnut
Walnut has a rich, deep colour and a fine grain that makes a piece look considered. It is a favourite for statement tables, consoles and headboards. Keep it out of long direct sun to avoid uneven fading.
Oak
Oak is strong with a visible, open grain and a lighter tone. It suits clean, contemporary shapes and everyday-use pieces like dining tables.
Sheesham
Sheesham (Indian rosewood) is hard, with warm tones and bold grain variation. It is a popular, characterful solid wood. See our teak vs sheesham vs mango wood guide.
Cane
Woven cane adds texture and lets air pass through, which is useful in a warm climate. It pairs well with darker woods. Keep it dry and dust it regularly.
Brass
Brass details bring warmth and lasting hardware. It develops a patina over time, or can be polished to keep a bright look.
Veneer and Engineered Boards
Veneer is a thin layer of real wood over a stable base. It allows large, flat surfaces without warping and is used widely in wardrobes and cabinetry. We explain where each material makes sense in our wood guide.
Choosing for Your Home
- Daily-use tables and beds: dense hardwood
- Statement pieces: walnut or a bold sheesham grain
- Light, airy rooms: oak and cane
- Large wardrobes and cabinets: veneer over a stable base
Frequently asked questions
- Which wood is best for Bangalore's climate?
- Dense, well-finished hardwoods such as teak handle humidity well. Whatever the wood, the seasoning, joinery and finish matter as much as the species.
- Does solid wood crack or warp?
- Properly seasoned and well-built solid wood is stable. Cracking and warping usually come from poor drying, poor joinery or extreme moisture changes.
- Can I choose the material for a custom piece?
- Yes. Tell us what you like and how the piece will be used, and we will recommend the material. Use the enquiry page to start.
